Digital transformation is also transforming the railway industry \u2013 the Eastern German Railway Corporation (ODEG<\/a>) proves it. Since 2015, the company has relied on mobile devices to modernize the daily work of train drivers, service staff, administration, and maintenance personnel. Centralized management of these devices is handled via Cortado MDM. In an interview with Mr. Ullrich, ODEG\u2019s Head of IT, it\u2019s clear that here, innovation is perfectly blended with pragmatism.<\/p>\n

It All Started with Digitalizing the Driver\u2019s Cab<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe realized early on that we needed a solution to efficiently manage the many tablets and smartphones,\u201d explains Mr. Ullrich. \u201cWhen we decided to digitalize the driver\u2019s cab, it was clear that we needed an MDM system.\u201d<\/p>\n

ODEG equips its employees \u2013 train drivers and service staff \u2013 with two devices: a tablet and a smartphone. Train drivers primarily use tablets for timetables and training materials due to the larger display and better readability. Smartphones, on the other hand, are used for tasks like making calls. Additionally, ODEG uses Casio mobile ticket sales devices for printing tickets bought by passengers. These Android devices are also managed with Cortado MDM. Altogether, 2,225 devices are covered.<\/p>\n

Why Cortado?<\/h2>\n

Before choosing Cortado MDM<\/a>, ODEG worked with another provider. \u201cWe regularly had issues with our old solution. So, we analyzed the market and evaluated several providers,\u201d recalls Mr. Ullrich. \u201cCortado convinced us \u2013 especially with its straightforward communication and proximity. As a Berlin-based company, they\u2019re practically right around the corner, which was nice to know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Ullrich particularly highlights the direct connection to support: \u201cNo call centers, no endless waiting loops \u2013 we have dedicated contacts who know our needs and truly help us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Optimized Workflows and Happy Employees<\/h2>\n

By implementing Cortado MDM, ODEG significantly improved its workflows. Timetable changes or new training materials are now distributed to devices in real time. \u201cIn the past, we\u2019d relay changes over the phone or send large stacks of paper back and forth. Now, everything is digital, saving us a lot of time and resources,\u201d says Mr. Ullrich. \u201cIt\u2019s a real leap forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Focus on Flexibility and Security<\/h2>\n

ODEG uses Android devices selected on criteria such as value for money and suitability for purpose. Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) is not an option, and all devices are provided by the company. Private use of the devices is not allowed. \u201cOur devices run only the apps necessary for the job,\u201d explains Mr. Ullrich.<\/p>\n

A standout feature is the quick availability of replacement devices. \u201cIf a train driver\u2019s tablet is out of use, a replacement needs to be provided quickly. After all, it stores all timetable documents, and without them, the driver isn\u2019t allowed to operate the train,\u201d Mr. Ullrich pointed out. \u201cThat\u2019s why we have replacement devices at several locations to ensure operations run smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moving Forward Together<\/h2>\n

ODEG is satisfied with its choice. Mr. Ullrich notes: \u201cOur requests are taken seriously and implemented. It shows that our opinions matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Mr. Ullrich doesn\u2019t foresee major changes. \u201cWe\u2019re well-positioned. Of course, there will always be minor updates, but the overall concept is very solid. And with Cortado, we have a partner we can rely on.\u201d<\/p>\n
