Imagine this: 40 iPhones and iPads are in daily use; in ambulances, during emergencies, and on-call duty. Everything needs to work quickly, reliably, and flexibly. But what happens when these devices need to be set up, equipped with apps, or updated?
This was exactly the challenge faced by the German Red Cross Emergency Services Branch in Tuttlingen (DRK Rettungsdienst Tuttlingen gGmbH) when they decided to implement a mobile device management (MDM) system in 2024. The goal was less effort, more transparency, and clear control.
What Mattered Most: Cost, Ease of Use, and Quick Implementation
The Red Cross branch employs 120 people, about a third of whom use mobile devices. The decision to introduce an MDM system didn’t come from a theoretical need but from real-life requirements: devices had to be managed, contacts centrally provided, and apps purposefully rolled out.
What mattered most to the emergency service team was keeping costs in check, ensuring the system was easy to use, and rolling it out quickly without any technical obstacles.
They found the solution at a Red Cross workshop where Cortado MDM was presented. Thorsten Lang, emergency services manager, could immediately see the benefits.
The Road to Implementation: Small Steps lead to Big Results
The rollout began the same year. Although the full implementation took almost six months due to limited internal resources, the collaboration with the Cortado team went smoothly and without complications.
“We worked closely with Cortado, it was all handled very professionally and reliably,” says Thorsten Lang, head of emergency services and responsible for selecting the MDM system.
There were no unexpected surprises along the way. The system integrated seamlessly into daily emergency operations, and fully stress-free.
Thanks to the time saved during device setup and management, the emergency service is also able to reduce costs.
Mr. Lang explains: “The added value of Cortado MDM for our organization lies in the decentralized management of devices, control of apps, and the ability to restrict unwanted features for each user in a flexible way. In addition, managing our devices with Cortado saves time on administration.”
