Control Update Behavior for Android Apps

July 26, 2024

Cortado MDM now supports controlled app updates from Managed Google Play. This feature allows you to manage the updating of Android apps precisely, tailoring it to the specific needs of your business.

To enable controlled app updates, the Cortado management portal offers various modes: standard updates, high-priority updates, and the Postponed mode.

The app update mode can be configured on a per-app and per-user group basis. This allows you to tailor your update strategy to the specific needs of different work areas, ensuring that every team in your organization receives optimal support and that operations remain smooth and efficient.

Overview of Update Modes

Default

In default mode, apps are automatically updated when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, and not actively in use. This ensures that updates are performed without consuming mobile data or interrupting daily work activities. This mode is suitable for field service personnel, maintenance technicians, and educational institutions. Updates are conducted over Wi-Fi and periods of inactivity, ensuring minimal disruption to work processes or important operational and educational activities.

High Priority

In high-priority mode, apps are updated immediately as soon as a new version is available and when the device next connects to the internet. This is crucial for applications that contain critical security updates or significant new features. This mode is ideal for apps in the healthcare or financial sectors, where timely updates are essential for utilizing current features and protecting sensitive customer data.

Postponed

The Postponed mode allows app updates to be paused for up to 90 days, enabling thorough internal testing of new versions before they are rolled out organization wide. This mode is beneficial for IT departments in large companies that want to first test updates in controlled environments to ensure stability and compatibility. It is also advantageous for production environments, where comprehensive testing of new versions before installation on production devices helps prevent downtime.
