Server Location Germany - Why Does It Matter?

In this interview, Michael Rödiger, COO at Cortado Mobile Solutions, explains the advantages of the new server location in Germany.

Hello Michael, we want to talk more about the importance of the server hosting location and the company's headquarters. Both have a major impact on data protection. Cortado also recently changed its hosting location. Where were the servers before, and where are they now?

Hello! Previously, the servers were in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and our new server location is now Frankfurt am Main in Germany.

Why did Cortado decide to move the server location to Germany?

With the move to Frankfurt, we are renewing our technical infrastructure. In doing so, we have continued to focus on data security, availability, and optimal performance of our services. We are continuously working on improvements to ensure that our MDM solution meets not only our own standards but also those of our customers at all times.

Furthermore, Frankfurt is a top location in Europe, offering excellent direct connectivity to DE-CIX and providing our customers with highly reliable availability via one of the largest internet backbones in the world.

Can you tell us more about how the German server location will affect compliance with the EU GDPR?

Yes. The EU GDPR and data protection regulations are on everyone's mind, and data privacy is a major and important topic. Two factors primarily determine the legal basis: the server location and the company headquarters. Since our headquarters are in Germany, we also process data according to German law.

When both the company headquarters and the server location are in Germany, there are no exceptions; the legal basis is clear - German law applies, and it is one of the strictest in terms of data protection.

What other advantages does the server location in Germany bring?

The Microsoft data center we use also meets the requirements of the current BSI IT-Grundschutz (IT Baseline Protection) and is one of the first data centers to hold the relatively new C5 certification. With this, we want to continue to meet the demand of many of our customers for a German compliance offering.

C5 certification - what is that exactly?

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) created the Cloud Computing Compliance Criteria Catalogue, or BSI C5 for short. It is a set of criteria that defines the minimum requirements for information security for cloud services that should not be fallen short of.

After the 2020 update, the catalog spans well over 132 pages. The requirements go into meticulous detail regarding physical security and also include points such as access controls, fire protection, and background checks for employees.
